Essential Travel Information

Altitude & Safety

Rainbow Mountain sits at 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). This is one of the highest day hikes in the world. It is mandatory to acclimatize in Cusco for at least 2-3 days before the trek. Drink plenty of water and maintain a very slow, steady pace as instructed by your guide.

Weather Dynamics

The weather is highly varied. Daytime temperatures average 15°C but can drop below freezing at the summit or during sudden cloud cover. The dry season (May to October) offers the best visibility, while the wet season (November to April) brings cooler, damper days.

Difficulty

This is a strenuous hike due to the elevation. While the distance is manageable (approx. 2 hours up), the thin air makes every step challenging. If you struggle, horses are available for rent for about 70% of the trail.

History and Geology

The vibrant stripes are caused by mineral deposits like iron oxide and clay, exposed over time by weathering and erosion. Originally discovered by locals, this sacred mountain has become a world-renowned destination for nature enthusiasts.
